Bangkok bus terminals: Mo Chit 2, Sai Tai Mai and Ekkamai — which one is yours?
Last verified: 3 September 2026 · terminal-to-route mapping measured from live inventory on Busaba's published Bangkok routes
Bangkok has three main intercity bus terminals, and the rule is directional: Mo Chit 2 for the north and northeast, Sai Tai Mai for the south and west, Ekkamai for the east coast. Get this right and everything else follows; get it wrong and you are 45 minutes of Bangkok traffic from your bus. In Busaba's live inventory, Mo Chit departures appear on 37 published Bangkok routes, Sai Tai on 22 and Ekkamai on 7 — and a booked ticket removes the guesswork entirely, because it names the terminal and platform in English and Thai.
Which Bangkok terminal goes where?
| Terminal | Thai name | Direction | Example destinations from live inventory |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mo Chit 2 (Bangkok Bus Terminal Chatuchak) | หมอชิต 2 | North & northeast | Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Khon Kaen, Nakhon Ratchasima, Buriram, Kalasin |
| Sai Tai Mai (Southern Terminal) | สายใต้ใหม่ | South & west | Phuket, Krabi, Hat Yai, Chumphon, Koh Samui / Koh Phangan / Koh Tao (bus + ferry), Kanchanaburi |
| Ekkamai (Eastern Terminal) | เอกมัย | East coast | Pattaya, Rayong, Trat (for Koh Chang), Koh Samet, Chanthaburi |
How do I get to each terminal?
Ekkamai is the easy one: it sits directly beside BTS Ekkamai station on the Sukhumvit Skytrain line — step off the train, you are at the terminal. Mo Chit 2 is near — not at — BTS Mo Chit / MRT Chatuchak Park: from the station it is a short taxi or motorbike-taxi hop (about ten minutes) into the terminal itself, so add that to your arrive-by time. Sai Tai Mai is on the Thonburi side of the river with no rail link; plan a taxi or ride-hail and respect Bangkok traffic — the crossing can be slow at rush hour.
Which counter do I go to?
Each operator staffs its own numbered counters, grouped by region served, and the big terminals hold dozens of them. With a pre-booked ticket you usually skip the counter hunt entirely: a Busaba QR ticket names the operator and platform, and most operators scan it at the gate. The exception is the handful of counter-only carriers, where the ticket tells you to collect a paper ticket at that operator's desk using your booking code — the booking states this clearly before you pay, so it is never a surprise at the terminal.
Can the same destination leave from two terminals?
Yes — and this catches people out. Chon Buri, for instance, shows live departures from both Ekkamai and Sai Tai Mai, depending on the operator. Some island-bound buses also pick up at more than one point. This is the strongest argument for booking rather than guessing: the terminal on your ticket is the terminal your specific bus leaves from, not the terminal a guidebook says the destination "usually" uses.
When should I arrive?
Thirty minutes before departure covers the normal case: find the platform, show the QR, stow luggage. Add time if you must collect a paper ticket at a counter-only carrier's desk, and add generously for Sai Tai Mai in rush hour, where the journey to the terminal is the risk, not the terminal itself.
